Q: How do I order a piece from this website? Can you send me more photos?
A: I believe that purchasing a hand-made object from the person who created it should be a different experience from buying a mass-produced item from a store/website/catalogue. Please phone me personally at 250-537-9862 or email me if you would like to order or receive more info/photos. Please do not send credit card info by email (not secure).
Q: What about taxes and duty?
A: Within Canada, I collect GST, PST and/or HST, as required. Shipping to the U.S. there are no taxes or duties on orders under $2000US. I fill out and attatch the required forms to your box.
Q: How do you ship?
A: By insured Expedited mail, unless requested otherwise. Please ask for specifics when you order.
Q: Where, besides this website, can I view and purchase your work?
A: My wife and I have a Studio/Gallery at home, 201 Grantville St., which is #26 on the Salt Spring Studio Tour this year. If what you see here interests you, please come by for a visit. Phone 250-537-9862 for an appointment any time of year, or stop by Tuesday - Friday, 11-5, between mid-May and Canadian Thanksgiving. We also have a booth at the famous Salt Spring Saturday Market during that same part of the year.
Q: Where do you get your ideas?
A: I take notice of the forms and surfaces that appeal to me, historical and contemporary ... especially pottery and turned wood ... but it is on the lathe as my general idea encounters the specific potentials and challenges in the wood that form, balance, detail, finish -- all evolve by a process of continuous improvisation. It is an exercise in letting go of preconceptions and familiar habits and being open to unexpected possibilities, which I find exciting and absorbing.
Q: Where do you get your wood?
A: I salvage almost all of it on Salt Spring Island ... from trees that have died or that were 'in the way' of some human activity and were headed for the firewood pile. Please see the Process page for more details.
